It had the distinction of being presented at The White House in 1976 as part of America's Bicentennial festivities, and is still an unequalled study of early Asian American community-building. <image:caption>May 22, 2024 - The Sacramento River and Historic Truss Bridge The river was the most beautiful and striking part of the Sacramento Delta. Locals told us that steamboats would carry pears, asparagus, and other produce from the fields down the river. We also learned that Walnut Grove is the only Delta town to occupy both sides of the river. The migrant workers lived on one side, and the families of wealthy, white landowners lived on the other. <image:caption>May 22, 2024 - Main Street, Locke Again, because of its historical designations, the original Locke buildings have been preserved. I stayed at an Airbnb that in the 70’s used to be Foon Hop & Co Meat Market. Because they’re all wood though, a couple were burnt or almost burnt to the ground, so our rooms were equipped with fire extinguishers. Eddie actually told me a funny story about how he almost set one of the buildings on fire himself during his stay. Photographed by Dani Nalangan</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Dani’s Commentary”: The inside of Hayashi Co. Its footage in Pieces allowed me to really imagine what it might’ve been like fifty years ago, bustling with working folk buying food for their families or making a living themselves. Eddie told me that a nearby tomato cannery was a big employer for the area, which again brings to light the irony of being essential in the production of food, yet unable to afford much of it yourself.</image:caption>

<image:caption>October 16, 1973 Photographed by: Eddie Wong “Dani’s Commentary”: Seeing this photo of Walnut Grove’s Market Street was shocking, since it hardly looks like this. One modern day sign on Market Street designates this area as “Historic Walnut Grove,” and this era is probably what it means.</image:caption>

<image:caption>May 22, 2024 - Because Walnut Grove doesn’t have any of the historical protections that Locke has, most of its original architecture is gone. Some things though, like the “Ben’s Drugs” sign have survived through the years.</image:caption>

<image:caption>May 22, 2024 - Like many of the commercial buildings in the area, Hayashi Co in the present had a “For Sale” notice where the front windows used to be. <image:caption>October 16, 1973 Photographed by Eddie Wong “Dani’s Commentary”: As seen in the documentary and explained by Eddie, many migrant worker families needed to grow their own personal farms to be able to eat, despite tending the fields on the clock. The fields weren’t owned by them and couldn’t be owned by them, even after Alien Land Laws were repealed in the ‘50s due to the Locke family maintaining ownership of 490 acres of the area.</image:caption>

<image:caption>October 16, 1973 Photographed by Eddie Wong “Dani’s Commentary”: Even in 1974, it seemed these buildings on River Road—a major thoroughfare that connects Walnut Grove and Locke—were being slowly vacated. While Yuen Chong was open at the time, photos of the others, like the building to the right of the market, would remain empty. Finding this photo in the archive was also crazy, because fifty years later I would take a shot almost just like it.</image:caption>
