ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
Presented by Visual Communications, Abe AF: The Brain Behind the Beret is a multimedia exhibit that honors the unparalleled legacy of Abraham Ferrer, a dynamic force at Visual Communications who has been at the heart of the organization since 1985 and he has been present for countless chapters and transitions in the organization’s history. He has served as Film Festival Director, designed publications and graphics, curated countless exhibits, assisted with training and education, and most recently worked in community outreach, engagement & education for the VC Archives. As part of the Abe AF Exhibit, Visual Communications will be hosting three in-person programs titled "Tough Talks with Abe" scheduled for October 10th, 17th, and 24th, 2024 at the Far East Lounge. Named after Ferrer’s short film, Tough Talks will feature fireside chats, a presentation and workshop by Abe himself, and a dialogue between Ferrer and our summer interns, offering a deeper understanding of his work, his legacy, and the impact he has had on Visual Communications and beyond.
Tough Talks: Meet the Beret
October 10th @ 6:00pm | Far East Lounge
This session will feature a fireside chat between caretakers of the VC Archives, Abraham Ferrer and Jason Tiangco, as moderated by Josaen Ronquillo. The discussion will center around the VC Archives, one of the largest photographic and moving image collections of Asian Pacific experiences in America, and Ferrer’s pivotal role in preserving these invaluable materials.
Tough Talks: Aesthetic AF
October 17th @ 6:30pm | Far East Lounge
In this session, Abe will present a slide deck showcasing his extensive body of work, with the potential for a workshop component. This presentation will offer a unique insight into Ferrer’s creative process, his journey through decades of community and cultural documentation, and the ongoing evolution of his artistry.
Tough Talks: Bridging the Gap
October 24th @ 7:00pm | Far East Lounge
This final session will feature conversations between Abe and 2024 VC interns Emma Fukunaga, Dani Nalangan, and Dana Worrell. The interns aim to learn more about Ferrer’s upbringing as a youth in the American diaspora, introduction to art, and how he’s been shaped by these experiences. Engaging in intergenerational dialogue, this exchange between a veteran of the arts and the future generation brings to mind questions of the importance of intergenerational connections.
